Methylphenidate for Borderline Personality Disorder in Adolescents
Expand descriptionThis study draws on the observation that there are genetic, clinical and neuropsychological similarities between Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Since psychostimulants such as methylphenidate are the mainstay of treatment of ADHD, it is proposed that psychostimulants be trialed in a population of female adolescents with BPD, with the intention of enhancing our understanding of BPD and providing a novel treatment option for this difficult-to-treat condition. Hypothesis: That selected patients with BPD will respond positively to a trial of methylphenidate.

Tolerance and Physiological Responses to the Modern Chinese Medicine “Dantonic Pill” in a Western Population
Expand descriptionDantonic Pill (DP) is a pharmaceutical product derived from medicinal herbs Salvia miltiorrhiza and Panax notoginseng. DP has been registered in China for the prevention and management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease for over ten years. Clinical trial studies in China have demonstrated that DP has few side effects and Asian people are well tolerant of the DP therapy. To date, DP is also availbale in many herb shops in Australia and however, the data concerning the tolerance and side effects of this product in Western population are limited. This project study aims to investigate the tolerance and general physiological responses to DP in Western people, through assessment of the symptems, blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG), bloof cell count, blood lipids and glucose, and liver and renal function in healthy adult Westerners folllowing a single dose of DP therapy.

The burden of subclinical synovial inflammation in gout
Expand descriptionAn observational pilot study to assess the burden of subclinical gout during an acute attack and during an intercritical period through asssessment of ultrasound detected synocial hypertrophy and urine hyaluronan
-
Pilot study to assess the expression of kallikreins, kininogens and kinin receptors in circulating and synovial fluid neutrophils in gout.
Expand descriptionPatients from Royal Perth hospital with gout of the knee will be asked to have some blood tests, an ultrasound examination of their knee and fluid withdrawn from the knee to look for evidence of kallikren kinin proteins involved in inflammation.

ABRACADABRA (ABRA) Improving Literacy through Technology A Multisite Randomised Control Trial Examining the Impact of a Web-Based Early Literacy program on Student Literacy in the Northern Territory (NT)
Expand descriptionThe purpose of this study is to determine whether literacy instruction using the ABRACADABRA (ABRA) program 30 minutes per day, 4 days per week for one Semester improves student literacy in the Northern Territory (NT) moreso than traditional literacy instruction. ABRACADABRA (ABRA) is an online web-based early literacy program designed by Concordia University in Canada according to best practices in literacy instruction. The study tests the hypothesis that students who receive ABRA instruction will have higher scores than students who do not receive ABRA instruction on two measures of foundational skills for future reading: 1) phonemic awareness (recognition of the sounds in the English language) and individual word reading.

Central Australia Swab Study: an assessment of circulating respiratory pathogens in a remote Indigenous community
Expand descriptionThe primary purpose of this study is determine the best method for transporting respiratory specimens for viral studies from remote Indigenous communities. The study will enable planning for respiratory illness surveillance and interventions in remote areas. The primary hypothesis is that there is no difference in the proportion of respiratory viruses detected in nasal swabs collected from children and adults in the community that have been frozen immediately compared to specimens that have been sent via routine post.

The Workplace POWER trial: a workplace weight loss program for male shift workers
Expand descriptionShift workers have been found to be at increased risk of insomnias, chronic fatigue, anxiety and depression, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal problems. Several well controlled epidemiological studies suggest that exposure to shift work is associated with increased health problems compared with working normal daytime hours and is an independent predictor of increased body mass index and obesity prevalence. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a workplace-based weight-loss program developed specifically for overweight and obese male shift workers.
